MSNBC "Hardball" host Chris Matthews joked about giving Hillary Clinton a "Bill Cosby pill" before interviewing her in footage from January 2016 obtained by the Cut.

The video, obtained by The Cut, was shot in an Iowa fire station moments before Matthews interviewed Clinton as she sought the Democratic presidential nomination.

"Where's that Bill Cosby pill I brought with me?" he quips seconds later, prompting nervous laughter and stunned faces from those around him.

The Cut's Noreen Malone, who uncovered the footage, noted that Matthews "then laughs, delighted with the line" and staffers are seen reacting "with disbelief, clearly uncomfortable".

Matthews responded to the newly discovered clip, telling NY magazine on Friday that it "was a awful comment I made in poor taste during the height of the Bill Cosby headlines", adding, "I realize that's no excuse". "I realize that's no excuse".

The reference was to accusations that Cosby drugged and assaulted women.

It's not even the first time Matthews has targeted Hillary Clinton, though this clip lacks the blunt sexism of questions like "Is her gender a problem in her ability to change her mind?" something he asked in 2006. He said, "I deeply regret it and I'm sorry".

Matthews has always been known to have a combative relationship with former candidate Clinton.

"The Cut said Matthews has a long history of derogatory comments about Clinton, and he once called her witchy", "anti-male" and "uppity", according to Jezebel. As of this writing, neither NBC Universal, NBC News, nor Matthews' own MSNBC has officially commented on the matter. MSNBC later confirmed the report from The Daily Caller that Mathews was formally reprimanded and that the employee had been paid compensation upon leaving her job.
