The two leaders talked Monday and noted recent inter-Korean discussions leading to North Korea sending athletes and an orchestra to South Korea for next month's Winter Olympics.

"There are some positive changes and related parties should work jointly to keep up the hard-won momentum for the easing of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and create conditions for the resumption of talks", the Chinese leader said in a phone call with Mr Trump.

On a discussion of trade issues, the White House says Trump also "expressed disappointment that the United States" trade deficit with China has continued to grow" and "made clear that the situation is not sustainable'.

But Trump has repeatedly said he is holding back trade actions against China in order to persuade Xi to enforce tough sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear-weapons program. The two sides need to maintain high-level contacts, bring the four high-level dialogue mechanisms between them into full play, and hold the second round of dialogues at a proper time, Xi told Trump, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

United States President Donald Trump has told the Chinese President Xi Jinping that the growing USA trade deficit with Beijing "is not sustainable".

President Trump and China's President Xi Jinping shake hands after making joint statements.

Tensions have escalated between Beijing and Washington in recent months, with China on Friday reporting its largest ever trade surplus with the United States in 2017 to US$275.8 billion - contrary to Trump's goal to narrow the USA trade deficit with China. He has also regularly taken aim at China's trade surplus with the US. The two countries should in a constructive way enlarge the pie of cooperation and properly settle the difference in economic relations and trade, he said.
