Real are 16 points behind league leaders and arch-rivals Barcelona, who can go 11 clear with a win at Real Betis later, and eight away from second-placed Atletico Madrid, who could only draw 1-1 with Girona on Saturday.

Real Madrid moved back into the top four of La Liga by thumping lowly Deportivo La Coruna 7-1 on Sunday, with Cristiano Ronaldo ending a miserable run of league form with a late double.

Rakitic and Messi combined in the 69th minute with the former delivering an inviting cross for Suarez who volleyed home to make it three.

The match saw Messi reach two more personal milestones of his own, the Argentina star having assisted a goal in five LaLiga matches in a row for the first time in his career.

Barcelona open up an 11-point lead at the top of La Liga courtesy of a 5-0 win over Real Betis in Seville.

As pundits and cynics gathered around to spot the cracks that show in Valverde's unit, Leo Messi and Luis Suarez pummelled them back into their rabbit holes.

The match kicks off at 7.45pm United Kingdom time and Barca know a win will move them 11 points clear of closest title rivals Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona had to wait until the 26th minute for their first serious look at the Betis goal; it came from Luis Suarez as the forward fed Roberto inside the Betis box, but the Spaniard lifted the ball over the crossbar from close range.

"I've coached against him in the past and I know what he's capable of. He is the best player there is and the best there will ever be".

"We needed that. In any case, it's what we were missing in the sense that scoring seven goals at home this season, it's hugely staisfying, and a relief", said Zidane.

"But as the game progressed, we got better. But, every game we win will be a very big step".
