That location is adjacent to a Walmart Supercenter store. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders later said she would not comment on the Sam's Club closings but that the wage increases were a sign that the tax measures "are having the impact that we had hoped".

Jessica Buckner, an employee at the Sam's Club on Muldoon Road in Anchorage, said workers were notified Thursday morning about the closures but were not told why the stores would be shut.

Within just a few minutes of shocked employees learning the news, word of the closings was quickly posted on Facebook, where customers expressed concern over membership fee refunds, especially for those who recently bought or renewed memberships.

Linden Mayor Derek Armstead went to the store location to meet with the regional and district managers after he received a letter about the closing early Thursday.

Some point out Sam's Club is giving certain employees bonuses due to tax reform - and wonder if the company appears to be doing well, why they're downsizing.

"After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we've made a decision to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy". That notice says three locations in the state were slated to be closed on January 26. "We'll convert some of them into eCommerce fulfillment centers - to better serve the growing number of members shopping with us online and continue scaling the SamsClub.com business".

Workers can contact the Union County American Job Centers, at 921 Elizabeth Ave.in Elizabeth, and 200 W. Second St.in Plainfield. In some places, employees reported arriving at stores to discover them closed and their jobs eliminated without warning.

Walmart has invested $2.7 billion in higher wages and training for workers to lower turnover and make the shopping experience more appealing.

Customers packed into the Dover Sam's Club on Friday, relieved the membership wholesaler was still open after so many other locations had been closed. Lots of things are going on in the economy, and we appreciate what Walmart is doing.
