The State Department confirmed that Feeley, who served for 35 years in the U.S.

"Ambassador Feeley.informed leadership of his decision on December 27, 2017", the official said. "That time has come".

Under Secretary of State Steve Goldstein said Feeley's departure was not related to the President's latest controversial remarks.Goldstein said he knew of Feeley's planned resignation 24 hours before Trump's alleged remarks, according to the Guardian.

"Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?"

Trump said he'd prefer to receive immigrants from countries like Norway. The White House released a statement immediately following The Washington Post's report, notably not denying that the president made these comments. Never said "take them out". I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians.

Throughout his 35 years in both the nation's Marines and Department of State, the ambassador dedicated his efforts to supporting integration and maintaining good relations between the Americas.

Feeley was nominated to the diplomatic post by then-President Barack Obama in July 2015.

"Due to his unwavering belief in the importance of the integration of the countries of the Americas, the ambassador focused most of his career in Latin America and the Caribbean", the U.S. Embassy Panama said in a Spanish-language press release. "[It is] not just in the manifestation of anti-LGBT attitudes".

Making matters worse, an unsourced rumor cropped up on Twitter claiming the U.S. Ambassador to Haiti had also resigned.
