The world's most expensive player came third in the 2017 Ballon d'Or behind victor Cristiano Ronaldo and former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi.

"Neymar was third in the voting and others could emerge but it will be very hard for anyone to take away the lead from these two players (Ronaldo and Messi)".

Perez laughed without commenting when asked about Neymar Sr's recent comments about it being "too early yet" to talk to Madrid about a future move for his son, but did recall past efforts to sign the player before he ended up at Barcelona.

The Real president previously claimed that if Neymar wants to win a Ballon d'Or, he should move to the Spanish capital.

"Being at Madrid would make it easier [for Neymar] to win the Ballon d'Or".

Perez and Real Madrid would surely struggle with Financial Fair Play if they tried to sign both Neymar and Hazard.

Real were also linked with his services in the summer but asked whether he regrets missing out on the France global, Perez added to Cope: "Mbappe is 18 years old".

"We will see. Everyone knew that I wanted to sign him at some point [before he joined Barcelona from Santos]".

Sonda's claim adds further controversy to the odd nature of Neymar's transfer from hometown club Santos to Barcelona in May 2013, and adds even more weight to Sonda's previous quotes describing Neymar's family as "traitors" that he made earlier this year.

“The trophies won past year helped to win this award.

Messi and Ronaldo have now won the last ten Ballons d'Or between them.

He told French daily L'Equipe: "I want seven. We already have the best players".

He scored 42 goals in all competitions last season including a brace in the 4-1 Champions League final victory over Juventus in May, which saw Madrid become the first team to successfully defend the title. Madrid always look for the best.
