"Clearly, this is a matter of deep concern, and we are working hard to rectify the matter in the coming days", NiceHash said in the Facebook post.

The marketplace suspended operations on Thursday while it investigated the breach, saying it was working with law enforcement as "a matter of urgency" while urging users to change their passwords.

Bitfinex, a Hong Kong-based bitcoin exchange, was briefly shut down a year ago after hackers stole almost 120,000 bitcoins - worth more than $65 million at the time.

The company did not respond to requests for comment.

The cryptocurrency mining marketplace NiceHash has been hacked, its team said in a newly released statement.

"Importantly, our payment system was compromised and the contents of the NiceHash Bitcoin wallet have been stolen". Although bitcoin owners are usually anonymous, the amounts stored in their wallets are publicly searchable online. It lets customers people offer up their extra computer processing power for the high-energy calculations typically used to create - or mine - new bitcoin or other cybercurrencies.

Another NiceHash user Philip Richardson tweeted: "If I don't get my btc back I will never use your service again".

Many users are bemoaning the fact that they lost money while waiting to reach the minimum payout: 0.01 BTC for external wallets and 0.001 BTC for NiceHash wallet.

"While the full scope of what happened is not yet known, we recommend, as a precaution, that you change your online passwords", the site told users. But some users have chosen instead to keep their earnings on NiceHash. Others said their balances on the website went down to zero. Last month, Tether suffered a data breach that saw the theft of $30m worth of tokens.

Hackers have carried out a heist on a leading digital currency platform, making off with an unspecified amount of bitcoin. As the outage protracted through the day, speculation swirled on social media that its digital wallet had been hacked.
