The Joburg Open is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine and Asian Tours.

The 28-year-old took advantage of playing the shorter Bushwillow course to finish eight-under, and his day could have been even better had he not bogeyed the par-three sixth. So I'm going to have to withdraw from this one.

"Obviously, I am very happy". Burmester's 81 came in the 2010 SAA Pro-Am Invitational but he's made big strides since and became a European Tour victor earlier this year. It's always nice leading a big tournament and especially the Joburg Open.

"When I played at Simola (recently) my little boy was sick with a bad chest, then my wife had the flu and then I got the flu, and lost a lot of weight".

Davidse mocked his world ranking of 680 with nine birdies and a lone bogey in halves of 32 and 31 over the Bushwillow track, the easier of two courses being used for the first two rounds.

Six golfers lie second on 64 - South Africans Jared Harvey, Erik van Rooyen and Ockie Strydom, English pair Matthew Baldwin and James Morrison and German Sebastian Heisele. "I just wanted to have fun, so I am very blessed to be playing well".

The 2010 British Open champion hurt his fingers when they were caught between two airport trollies as he returned to South Africa from competing at the Mauritius Open this past weekend.

Oosthuizen, who was coming off successive top-10 finishes at the Nedbank Golf Challenge and Mauritius Open, was understandably one of the favourites to win the R16.5 million event, but he proposed compatriot Dylan Frittelli, the victor of the Indian Ocean island tournament last weekend, as a strong contender for the title at Randpark.
