The Centre told the three-judge bench that it will extend the deadline for those who did not apply for the Aadhaar card yet and do not possess any id proof.

As the court said that the matter would be heard next week by the Constitution bench, Attorney General K.K. Venugopal indicated that the deadline for the linking of bank accounts with Aadhaar would be extended till March 31, 2018. The extension will only be given to those who don't have Aadhaar card as yet.

Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for those who are opposed to Aadhaar scheme told the bench, also comprising justices A. M. Khanwilkar and D. Y. Chandrachud, that the central government should give an undertaking that no coercive steps would be taken against those fail to link their Aadhaar with various services. Our goal is, all duplicate PANs should be eliminated which are not linked to Aadhaar card.

"The mandatory requirements of Aadhaar for PAN, bank accounts, welfare programs, and SIM cards have been challenged in the Supreme Court and no stay has been granted".

While the deadline for verifying bank accounts and income tax Permanent Account Number (PAN) by providing Aadhaar is December 31, for SIM cards it is February 6. Aadhaar centres have been opened in banks, which makes it easy for the customers. The new deadline will be March 31 instead of December 31, and a notification for this will be issued tomorrow, the court was told.

Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act says that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017 and eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar number to the tax authorities.

On November 26, the top court had said that it would hear the petitions after its constitution bench concludes hearing the Delhi-Centre governance dispute.
