"Huawei's consumer mobile services in Africa will include an app store for locally-developed games, music, movies, books, and other content", the company said. A similar trend was noticed with the game of the year with Splitter Critters named as the iPhone game of the year, while for the iPad, it was The Witness. Editors and curators from Apple Music, App Store and iTunes highlight great content from indie artists and developers from around the globe. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was also rated as the best song of 2016 by Apple.

Rather interestingly, the game of the year choices for iPhone and iPad are not freemium titles.

To begin with, on Apple Music, Drake topped album of the year with More Life, while Ed Sheeran's Shape of You got top song honors. Taylor's Swift album Reputation is already the number 3 best-selling album for 2017, despite debuting only a few weeks ago.

"App Store editors identify four breakout trends in app culture for 2017: the introduction of AR (augmented reality) apps and games, the rise of real-time competitive gaming, apps focused on mental health and mindfulness and apps transforming storytelling and reading", Apple said in a blog post. As we previously noted, Bitmoji has seen explosive growth over the previous year and a half as it's steadily integrated the app's customizable emoji into Snapchat.

Apple has also released the usual top charts listings for free and paid apps and games.

On iPad and its larger screen it is perhaps no surprise that a creative app, illustration app Procreate, was the year's top seller. Top movies for the year included names like Wonder Woman, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Moana, Sing and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

It's also hardly shocking to see crowd pleasers and essentials like Bitmoji, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Google Maps or Netflix among the iOS App Store's most popular 2017 apps.
