Met Police are on the scene of a traffic collision in Covent Garden, with witnesses reporting that a black cab has mounted the pavement.

Scotland Yard said officers were called just after 5pm to reports of a taxi hitting pedestrians in Southampton Street.

A spokesperson told The Independent the incident was not terror related but the exact cause of the crash is not yet known.

"Police on scene at Covent Garden dealing with serious injury accident involving a taxi".

The terrifying incident comes less than 24 hours after a suspected terrorist ploughed through a group of cyclists in NY city in a pickup truck killing eight innocent people, five of whom were Argentinaian nationals.

One of those has been left "seriously injured", with the London Ambulance Service confirming he has a serious leg injury and has been rushed to a major trauma centre. "People running. All Covent Garden and Strand closed off".
