Texas church shooting: Mental health and gun violence

Associate professor of health science from Ball State University, Jagdish Khubchandani, says when a mass murder occurs, the mentally ill are often used as the scapegoat.

"If you did what you're suggesting there would have been no difference three days ago, and you might not have had that very fearless person who happened to have a gun in his truck and shoot him, and hit him and neutralize him", Trump said responding to a question during a joint news conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Trump claimed such measures would not have stopped mass shootings like Sunday's attack at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and actually could make them worse by preventing others from confronting the gunman.

President Trump is on an overseas trip in Asia.

"Mental health is your problem here", Trump said, noting that "based on preliminary reports" the shooter was "a very deranged individual".

City officials also have noted most guns used in crimes come from outside Chicago - with many coming from Indiana, Wisconsin, and MS, where gun laws are much more lax. Trump also claimed that the USA had already stepped up its retaliation against the Islamic State group after the attack.

"He has asked that that process be reviewed, and we're waiting on some of the details of that to take place", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said October 27 when asked about bump stocks.

In February, Trump signed legislation reversing an Obama-era regulation that would have made it harder for Americans with mental illnesses to buy a gun. The rule would have affected an estimated 75,000 beneficiaries who would have been added to the national background check database.

As he did following last month's Las Vegas massacre of 58 people, Trump pushed back against the question, calling it a "situation that probably shouldn't be discussed too much" and noted that he was "in the heart of South Korea".

On the contrary, he underlined that the assailant was shot by an armed nearby resident.
