The best video, claimed by U.S. rapper Kendrick Lamar, was one of the few awards to be chosen by the MTV team.

Ed Sheeran won Best Live Act and Best Rock went to Coldplay.

Taylor Swift got six nominations, but walked away empty handed while those that did get presented with trophies were Camila Cabello, who took the gong for best pop, and rapper Kendrick Lamar who won best video for 'Humble'.

The awards are held in a different European city each year, with winners selected by fans across the continent.

The 33-year-old hip-hop artist was performing his track Unforgettable at the awards ceremony at London's SSE Arena on Sunday night, when a banner-waving man suddenly emerged on the stage.

During the show, Dua Lipa was honoured with the Best New Artist award and although she couldn't be at the event, she took to Twitter to share her excitement.

Rita Ora hosted and performed, opening the show alongside Kurupt FM, the stars of BBC comedy "People Just Do Nothing", with a skit that featured London Mayor Sadiq Khan. He received the awards for Biggest Fans, Best Song for "There's Nothing Holding Me Back", Best Artist and Best Canadian Act. London grime artist Stormzy arrived in a police auto and left in a blaze of fireworks after performing the rousing "Big For Your Boots". Other big set-piece performances on the night included best pop victor Camilia Cabello's epic routine, which culminated in a Havana-style swimming pool being projected onto the stage, and The Killers' performance of "The Man", which used an innovative 360-degree filming technique. David Guetta closed the show with his new single, "Dirty, Sexy, Money", with guests French Montana, Charli XCX and Afrojack.
