Former Manchester City star Robinho, the first big signing of the Sheikh Mansour era in 2008, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for his involvement in the sexual assaulted of a woman in 2013.

The Brazilian forward was playing for Italian giants AC Milan at that time.

However, Robinho, who now plays for Atletico Mineiro in the Brazilian league, has the opportunity to appeal the verdict under Italian law.

A report by Football Italia claimed that Robinho will given a chance to appeal.

The sentence will not begin until after Robinho has appealed the verdict.

Beginning his career at Santos, Robinho joined Real Madrid in 2005, stayed for three years and won two La Liga titles before moving to Manchester City.

A tribunal was held in Milan this evening where Robinho and five associates were found guilty of what directly translates as "group sexual assault". And after a five year spell, he secured a transfer to Chinese side Guangzhou Evergande.

Robinho managed just 10 appearances for the Chinese Super League outfit though before joining Atletico Miner a year ago.
