A Manchester woman who roasted her roommate's beloved pet ferret alive in an oven told cops she brutally killed the animal because she was pregnant and her housemate had been stealing her clothes, police said.

Manchester police arrived at the apartment about 2:40 a.m. Wednesday after firefighters removed a "burnt item" from the apartment.

Firefighters said the ferret had "distinct linear burn marks" on its body that were consistent with the shape of the oven coil.

Once police had spoken with the two permanent residents of the apartment, they had "gathered enough probable cause to arrest Clifford who was charged with one count animal cruelty", according to the New Hampshire Union-Leader.

Clifford's roommate, Cara Murray, says the woman put her 2-year-old ferret, named Angel, in the oven and turned on the heat, killing her.

"To lose a ferret, it's like losing a kid or family". She is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday. Murray told WHDH that Angel nipping Clifford's foot had been the final straw.

Murray said she believes the attack was planned because the ferret is young and still "nips".

Judge Gillian Abramson told Clifford, "These allegations display a profound sense of sadism". Murray tearfully told NBC 12 News. That is of deep concern to this court.

Clifford's lawyer, Callan Maynard, reported CBS Boston, said, Clifford's husband was 'very concerned for her health and her welfare, and being incarcerated because she is 32 weeks pregnant, your honor'. And for that reason, I am setting bail in the amount of $10,000 cash only.
