Militant, Army man killed in Kulgam gunfight

A Hizbul Mujahideen militant and an Army man were killed and a policeman injured in an encounter in volatile south Kashmir's Kulgam district in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

The forces cordoned a section of Tral after reports of the presence of militants, following which the encounter ensued. As the troops laid cordon, they came under heavy fire from the militants, triggering off an encounter. The police said that "the attack was repulsed and both the militants were killed".

Later, an intense gunfight broke out after militants hiding in the area started firing at the armed forces.

"The militants fired upon a joint party of police, army and paramilitary troopers who were deployed at a crossing to check the movement of vehicles". The operation has not been called off yet, Pani said.

"The slain militant has been identified as Muzamil Ahmad of Yaripora village of Kulgam district".

Officials said the militants could be foreigners.

Gunfight was going on, the spokesman said, adding, further details are awaited.

Authorities suspended rail service in North and internet service in twin districts of Kulgam and Anantnag. "The security personnel fired several rounds in the air during the search". According to a police spokesperson, "The operation turned into an encounter".

This comes a day after two unidentified militants were gunned down by security forces in Handwara.
