In the comics, she spent decades operating under the name Ms. Marvel, before taking the title of Captain for herself in a series of comics by Kelly Sue McCormick starting in 2012.

Set for release in 2019, Captain Marvel will be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson, It's Kind of a Funny Story), from a script by Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. She gains powers that include strength and flight. Consequently, Marvel Studios acquired elite talent for this endeavor in the Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson, who will tackle the role of pilot Carol Danvers, who will become endowed with superpowers to become Captain Marvel. Even though it is not very clear in the casting report, Mar-Vell in the comic books is the Kree warrior who was Carol Danvers' mentor and namesake. Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One) is in talks to play the main villain in the film, which is expected to introduce the Skrulls - a shape shifting alien race - into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The obvious choice would be Mar-Vell, predecessor to Carol taking up the Marvel mantle. We also learned that the film be set in the '90s and that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) will play a major role in the movie. Carol Danvers doesn't exactly have a great track record with her relationships, with a good number of them ending up dead. She's due to start shooting the movie in January 2018. Captain Marvel will hit cinemas in March, 2019.
