"Last week, I was in the hospital and I grabbed her hand and squeezed, 'I love you, '" Fallon said with tears in his eyes. It's pretty raw stuff, especially from a host who's often accused of being somewhat one-note and superficial.

Fallon canceled last week's shows following the November 4 death of his mother, Gloria.

Mike DiCenzo, a producer and writer on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon", explained on Twitter that they asked Swift to perform "on a complete whim" since she was in town from doing "Saturday Night Live" over the weekend and "she said yes with zero hesitation". "I'm telling you, going through her things, it's an example of how much she loved life". Her performance of "New Year's Day" was not originally in the cards, but the show's crew arranged it as a special gift for Fallon.

Jimmy Fallon's late mother, Gloria.

"And we would hold hands".

She would squeeze my hands three times and say, "I love you".

In the video below, you can see what Jimmy had to say about his mother in the wake of her passing - including a story about how he and his mother would communicate the love that they had for each other. At the time, Fallon issued a statement saying: "Today I lost my biggest fan".

First, a quick word about Taylor Swift. It was a lovely coincidence in a handsome performance.

Swift performed a new song off her recently released album, Reputation: "New Year's Day".

Taylor sat down at the piano to sing the heartfelt song and was accompanied by just an acoustic guitar and some backup singers.

Gloria Fallon died "peacefully" on 4 November in hospital in NY.

"I feel so grateful to be able to do this every single night, and I'm very appreciative of all the support from all of you that my family received over the past week".
