"That y'all must be running out of people", he tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story. Intelligence, charm, and social awareness all play a part in who we find attractive, and this year there were plenty of interesting guys on the scene to choose from.

People's Sexiest Man Alive issue hits newsstands Friday.

Shelton said girlfriend Gwen Stefani convinced him to accept the honor.

Although he felt flattered to be given the rank every man desires, Shelton expressed his confusion over the selection and used humility to blame his win on symmetry.

Bonus for the outspoken Shelton: He can hold the accolade over the head of Adam Levine, his fellow coach on the singing competition and 2013's Sexiest Man Alive. "As proud as I am and honored that you guys asked me, that's really the only thing I care about". Go to, or download the PeopleTV app on your favorite mobile or connected TV device.

Shelton, 41, opened up to the magazine about his awkward phase, his food weaknesses and how he stays in shape. "I think to describe myself as a child, one word comes to mind".

'I feel like people need to write notes to NBC and beg them to let me come back, ' Gwen joked. And I'm still fat today. And then I'm not hungry again until 10 o'clock, well what's in there? "It is really bad", Shelton admitted.

If in fact Shelton was ever reluctant about the title, he doesn't seem so now.

"When [people] would say to Adam, 'Mr".

"I've been ugly my whole life", he added in a statement, Reuters reported.
