Murphy, the Democratic candidate, was declared the victor over the Republican, current Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, in Tuesday's election by all major news outlets within an hour after polls closed.

But shortly after 8 pm, CNN, then a few other networks, began announcing Phil Murphy, the Democratic nominee, as the next governor from the Garden State.

In fact, in his primary victory speech, Phil Murphy proclaimed his desire to sign a marijuana legalization bill within his first 100 days in office.

Guadagno had hoped to succeed her boss, Chris Christie.

"It was a great race", she said.

"With Donald Trump in the White House, Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, polluters running the EPA, zealots heading the Department of Education, and Steve Bannon holding Republicans in congress hostage, governors will have never mattered more", says Murphy, seen with Lieutenant Governor elect Sheila Oliver.

"We will rebuild our state from the bottom up and the middle out and we'll ask those at the very top to do their fair share", he said.

New Jersey's next governor wants to thank voters in person.

Unlike in the Virginia gubernatorial race, President Trump ignored this one on Twitter.

"Virginians have answered and have spoken", Northam said.

Republican Gov. Chris Christie Christie said he promised Murphy his administration's full support leading to the inauguration on January 16.
