A 21-year-old woman engineer was killed while her family members are battling burns, after they were set on fire in Chennai by a classmate of hers, who had been stalking her for over a month.

Indhuja succumbed to the injuries while her mother and sister were admitted to hospital in critical condition after they suffered fatal burns.

Akash went to her house and threatened the woman for setting himself on fire. He demanded to speak to her, but the family refused to let him in.

He then threw petrol at Induja and set her on fire.

The incident took place at around 9:00 pm on Monday when the victim's father was not at home.

The accused, Aakash, absconded right after but was caught on Tuesday morning.

Demanding a strong punishment to the offender, PMK chief S Ramadoss said it was a "matter of concern that the government has not taken any steps to rein in violence against women, staged in the name of one-side love".

On hearing their screams, the neighbours rushed to the victim's house. The victim's mother is said to have suffered 49 per cent burns and her is said to be in the ICU. Initially, they didn't open the door, but Akash insisted that he would only to talk to Induja.

A neighbour said the ambulance arrived too late, at least 40 minutes after a call was made.

The victim's uncle, who spoke to the media, said that Akash knew about Induja's father was working overseas and therefore was not at home, which is why he came to the house. "Knowing that my brother is working overseas, the accused came to Induja's residence".
