Authorities say five people have been killed and 10 injured in shootings at multiple locations in rural Northern California, and the shooter has been killed by police.

The gunman, who had just shot a parent and child near the building, headed straight for the elementary school with his truck.

One student at the elementary school was hit by gunfire and transported to the local hospital for treatment, Johnston said. The gunman was shot by officials, according to the sheriff's department.

Tiffany's husband, Brian Rodgers, said another witness reported seeing a white pickup drive through the school gate and start shooting.

"I am told the suspected shooter is deceased by law enforcement bullets", Johnston said.

The K-5 school, which has about 100 students, does not have any police officers on-site, as the local Sheriff's Office responds to any crime incidents.

California Gov. Jerry Brown has also released a statement on the shooting, saying that he and his wife are "saddened to hear about today's violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren".

Authorities said the shooting occurred around 8 Rancho Tehama, near Red Bluff, Calif., about 120 miles northwest of Sacramento.

The alleged shooter often fired multiple rounds during the early morning hours, and Flint said living near him was "hell".

At least two of the injured are children, officials said, and the dead are all adults. "This guy has been insane, and he's been threatening us and everything". "A number of students" were taken on a medevac from the area, Johnston said, and the school has been cleared.

A gunman's rampage has claimed the lives of four people, during a school shooting in California.
