Brennan: Trump Should be Ashamed of Impugning Clapper's Character on Vet's Day

Former CIA Director John Brennan said Sunday that President Trump called him a political hack in order to cast doubt on his and other intelligence agencies' conclusion that Russian Federation sought to influence the 2016 election.

Trump has sought to confute the USA intelligence community's conclusions that Russian Federation, under Putin's specific orders, meddled in the 2016 United States Presidential Election to favor Trump and discredit the Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton.

His statement was troubling, all the more so since multiple USA intelligence groups-including the C.I.A. and F.B.I. -agree that Russian Federation probably did influence the outcome of the election.

The agency said it would have no further comment.

During Trump's trip to Asia, Trump told reporters that he believed Putin was being honest when he said at a meeting Saturday in Danang, Vietnam, that Russian Federation had not interfered in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Brennan fired back at the president's claims that he, Clapper, and former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey were "political hacks". Comey is proven now to be a liar and he is proven now to be a leaker.

While giving credence to Putin's denials of involvement, Trump simultaneously insinuated that there is doubt about the findings of US intelligence agencies, which have, in fact, determined conclusively that Russian Federation meddled in the elections. "You can only ask so many times", Trump told reporters on Air Force One. He said he absolutely did not meddle in our election.

"He seems very susceptible to rolling out the red carpet and honor guards and all the trappings and pomp and circumstance that come with the office, and I think that appeals to him, and I think it plays to his insecurities", Clapper said.

Since leaving government, Clapper said more information had come out that raises at least "circumstantial questions" about potential connections between Trump's associates and Russian Federation. After Trump's comments, the Central Intelligence Agency said its director, Mike Pompeo - who is close to Trump - stood by the January assessment, something a Central Intelligence Agency spokesman told me last week. "And I believe, I really believe, that when he tells me that, he means it". "And to impugn the character of somebody like Jim Clapper - on Veterans Day - who has dedicated so much of his life to this country, I just find that outrageous, and it's something I think that Mr. Trump should be ashamed of".

But Trump had already relayed Putin's reaction to the USA intelligence community's conclusions on Russian interference, CNN's Tapper pointed out Sunday, and further noted that the Russian president was insulted by this conclusion.

"I think Mr. Putin is very clever in terms of playing to Mr. Trump's interest in being flattered".

"Well first of all he was referring to us and political hacks because he was trying to delegitimize the intelligence community assessment that was done", Brennan told CNN's "State of the Union".

The intelligence community released an unclassified version of its assessment in January, saying Putin ordered the election meddling to hurt Hillary Clinton's candidacy and bolster Trump's successful bid.
