He will not be suspended for the entire game, however, though Riley did not elaborate on how long Mayfield will sit before entering the game. Mayfield spent much of his postgame address Saturday apologizing for his actions.

On Monday, Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley talked in depth about senior quarterback Baker Mayfield after announcing the punishment the quarterback will face after his actions during the Sooners' game against Kansas.

Mayfield won't be a team captain either, Riley said during an emotional press conference announcement Monday morning. With Mayfield out, Kyler Murray will start.

Before the game, Kansas captains refused to shake hands with Mayfield and his fellow Sooner captains at midfield for the coin toss. Mayfield finished the game 18-of-27 passing for 333 yards and 3 touchdowns. I apologize. It's disrespectful.

Oklahoma (10-1) is right in the thick of College Football Playoff contention.

"I got caught up in a competitive game, a chippy game, but what I did today, tonight, was unacceptable", Mayfield said. It's not the example I want to set.

USC quarterback Sam Darnold and Penn State running back Saquon Barkley are also in the running for the Heisman, but Mayfield's performance over the last two weeks has made him the most appealing candidate. He went 20-for-30 with 257 yards and three touchdowns in the recent victory over Kansas.
