The prospect of Fernando Alonso racing for Toyota at Le Mans this year moved a step closer after the Japanese manufacturer said he would test with them in Bahrain.

Fernando Alonso has been hard at work on Sunday at the Bahrain International Circuit.

Alonso, who is set to race at Le Mans for Toyota in 2018, set a best lap time that was within 0.7 seconds of regular driver Mike Conway. Testing an LMP1 vehicle is always a nice thing for any racing driver because these cars are unbelievable to drive.

Alonso is a two-time victor of the Monaco Grand Prix, and made his Indianapolis 500 debut previous year, but will take the first step towards a Le Mans bow in 2018 on Sunday in Bahrain. "I have wanted to test a auto like this for a long time now and today I could achieve that so I am happy", said Alonso. "These cars are fantastic to drive".

Alonso will enjoy his first sports auto race appearance in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January when he races for McLaren executive director Zak Brown's United Autosports team, acting as preparation for a Le Mans debut.

The Spaniard visited Toyota's Cologne factory on November 7 for a seat fitting and simulator session.

Alonso's talks with Toyota have extended to the possibility of the driver taking part in most of the WEC campaign in 2018, alongside his F1 commitments with McLaren. Along with the Monaco Grand Prix and Indianapolis 500, Le Mans completes the triple crown of motorsport and only Graham Hill has tasted victory in all three events.

Alonso, who won at Monaco in 2006 and 2007, competed at Indy this year and was running competitively when his engine failed in the closing stages of the race.
