Since Black Friday comes so near the beginning of December, it's hard to separate it from the Christmas season in general, and this weekend of deals essentially gets the holiday shopping season started.

Most websites will let you filter their Black Friday deals, by price or by product type, and this can help you navigate.

Small business selling products through Amazon Marketplace and Handmade at Amazon will also be taking part in the sales event this year, which will give you a chance to buy bespoke, handcrafted items at discount prices.

Electrical goods such as flatscreen TVs prove popular on Black Friday but rising inflation is likely to thwart big discounts.

However, £1.74m is expected to be spent every minute online in the United Kingdom on Black Friday, according to figures from online trade association IMRG and the couriers insurance firm Staveley Head, with £700m spent before 9am.

Don't hang about though, as the stock will be limited - if in doubt, it's always better to commit to a deal before it sells out and disappears forever. Last year, numerous best deals sold out within minutes and others within hours, so be quick if you see what you're looking for because it might not be there for long.

Black Friday, which takes place on the day after Thanksgiving, falls on November 24 this year.
