A crushing 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago - coupled with wins by Honduras and Panama - ended the United States chances of a World Cup berth. Victories to Panama and Honduras sealed America's fate.

This is the first time that an American contingent failed to make it to the World Cup since 1986, over three decades ago.

"Every single one of those players?".

"The United States has been eliminated from World Cup 2018", Wahl wrote on Twitter. Major League Soccer is more committed than ever to building the sport in the US and Canada.

"The discussion after Brazil [2014] was, 'Can we beat the Colombias and the Belgiums and the Argentinas of the world", Twellman said.

"There's an arrogance in our sport that I don't understand", Twellman said, explaining that American arrogance in American football, baseball, basketball and hockey is fine because the USA has the best leagues in those sports. We can't beat Trinidad on a field that's too wet and too heavy? "With the amount of money that is in Major League Soccer and in this sport, you can't get a draw, a tie against Trinidad? What are we doing?" "Max, you don't deserve to go to the World Cup, plain and simple". For fans of the team back home, it was an unbelievable loss and a huge setback to interest in soccer within the country.
