At New York Comic Con, the first trailer for The X-Files season 11 offered fans a peek past the cliffhanger, but it didn't offer any direct looks at William. The all-new 10-episode installment will once again be executive-produced by creator Chris Carter, with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning in their roles as iconic FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

"They get kissin' close", Carter said of the relationship between Dana Scully and Fox Mulder this upcoming season. "It didn't feel like we necessarily (delivered) everything the fans were expecting of us last time".

Perhaps, in apparent reference to the couple's son William, the heart of the new season is to be found in Scully's whisper to Mulder of "You have to find him and you have to stop him before he releases hell on Earth".

The EP did say that the first episode of the new season would peel back some of the infamous Cigarette Smoking Man's backstory. "[I returned for Season 11] because it felt like it wasn't over".

"No, no, I think this will be it for me", Anderson revealed in a roundtable interview at NYCC. Despite a medium reception from critics, the show posted some out of this world ratings, averaging 16 million viewers to earn the spot of the fifth highest-rated broadcast series of the season. "So, I can't answer that question definitively but I can tell you that there are more stories to tell".
