Guarantano had lost a preseason competition with Dormady for the starting spot.

Guarantano, the nation's No. 1 dual-threat quarterback prospect in the 2016 industry-generated 247Sports Composite, has completed 12 of 24 passes this season for 54 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions.

The New Jersey native replaces junior Quinten Dormady, who has started all five games for the Vols so far this season. He went on to cite all the close contests the two teams have participated in since he arrived, pointing out that every game has been close since he took over as head coach. "The scheme is the scheme, the scheme is in place, so it's more just I think Jarrett has earned that right and that opportunity".

Volunteers coach Butch Jones said Monday that "multiple factors" had led to Taylor's suspension without going into specifics.

Scott added that Guarantano has come a long way since. "He's done a really good job just mentally, understanding how to focus, how to be a great teammate, learning how to take the steps to be a quarterback". The Vols had a bye week to prepare and get ready, and Jones recently called the bye week one of the best he's had.

"Quinten's a competitor", Jones said Wednesday. "Obviously, he was very, very disappointed".

Redshirt senior receiver Josh Smith defended Dormady from criticism on Tuesday and said blame for Tennessee's offensive struggles should not fall only the quarterback.

Nevertheless, the Vols will be heading into Saturday's game without a couple of their players.
