During a recent overseas tour, Rahul while replying to a querry, had consented on becoming the Congress president.

Incidentally, some years back when Rahul Gandhi was nearing Hunsur via Nagarahole-H.D.Kote Road, his auto was stopped near a dilapidated tile factory to urgently facilitate him to ease himself and like the present incident, it made news in the news-hungry newspapers in Mysuru. She confirmed the development at the launch of former President Pranab Mukherjee's autobiography.

The Congress leader also took pot shots at PM Modi and BJP president Amit Shah saying, "The two beneficiaries of the business dealings of Amit Shah's son Jay are Narendra Modi and Shah".

The likely elevation will be weeks before the Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat where the Congress faces a tough challenge from the BJP. The Election Commission has given the Congress deadline till December to conclude the exercise.

Rahul's promotion as the party president has been expected for a while now, with several Congress members openly expressing their support for the same.

47-year-old Rahul has been serving as the party's vice-president since 2013. But the Congress faced a series of electoral reverses after its debacle in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, in which Rahul was the party's lead campaigner. "This is the right time to elevate Gandhi to the top post as it will give us strength to fight divisive forces in the country".

"There is no opposition to Rahul's elevation as Congress president and hence it was passed unanimously soon after Babbar moved the resolution during the meeting", said UPCC spokesman Amarnath Agarwal.
