PDP ex-panch killed, set ablaze in south Kashmir

Day after suspected militants killed a worker of ruling PDP near his home, a group of people Tuesday afternoon ransacked his house and later set it on fire in Homhuna village in Imamsahab area of Shopian district, police said.

Later Hizbul militant Showkat Falahi was killed in a scuffle with the family of the slain PDP activist.

Immediately, police swung into action and rescued the family members which included Sheikh's mother, Rafiqa, wife Nusrat Begum, brother Farooq Ahmed Sheikh, his two sons and two daughters. SSP Shopian, AS Dinkar said that Showkat Kumarwas shot dead by his own associates at Imam Sahab Shopian after they had an argument over the shooting of the PDP activist Mohammad Ramzan Sheikh (50) near his residence at Huomhuna, Imamsahab at around 8:05 pm.

Earlier, in October, terrorists shot dead a former Sarpanch in Anantnag district. "Soon after the incident, fire tenders along with the police team rushed to the spot to douse off the flames", he said.

Director general of police SP Vaid tweeted that the mob acted on the "instigation of terrorists".

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and opposition National Conference leader Omar Abdullah condemned the "dastardly act".
