The tragic incident that claimed the life of Girard Officer Justin Leo, began around 10 on Saturday night.

It happened in the City of Girard, Ohio in the northeast part of the state. The suspect opened fire as the officer approached the home. His partner returned fire and killed the gunman.

Officials are still investigating the fatal shooting, withholding the suspect's name until his family has been notified of his death. The 31-year-old Leo was a five-year veteran of the police department.

" An absolute gentleman and someone who the city has been proud of since he had been here with us", Girard Mayor Jim Melfi said, according to WFMJ. It's certainly the saddest day for me personally.

Authorities say Officer Leo died from his injuries at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown just before midnight.

"Public service has no higher calling than those who put themselves in harm's way for their fellow citizens".

"Last night Officer Leo died a hero".

An officer was shot and killed in Trumbull County over the weekend while responding to a domestic situation.

A vigil will be held in honor of Officer Leo on Sunday evening at 6:00 pm at Girard Stadium.
