A 30-year-old man was arrested after a police officer was fatally shot during a routine patrol in New Orleans early Friday.

The Officer was transported to University Medical Center, where he died. Harrison said four officers were patrolling the area when they "saw something that aroused their suspicion", and caused them to exit a police auto. "I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", he said.

The New Orleans Force Investigation Team will investigate the officer-involved shooting, according to department protocol, Harrison said.

State Police and ATF were also on the scene early Friday morning.

After police shot the man who opened fired at them, Harrison said, the wounded gunman fled into an apartment. New Orleans SWAT surrounded the building and were able to get the suspect to peacefully surrender, Harrison said. The identities of the officer and suspect have not been released.

The police chief said grief counselors are on the scene.

"These are the worst kind of days for the city", the mayor said.

"This hurts", Harrison said.
