Mum jailed for refusing to get son vaccinated

A MI mother has lost primary custody of her child after she was jailed for five days for not following through on an agreement to vaccinate her 9-year-old son.

A Detroit mother who says she "cares deeply" for her children has been jailed and had her custody rights reduced after refusing to get one of them vaccinated.

Now, she's breaking her silence about her time behind bars, the court system, and the support she's received from near and far and most importantly, her son.

"It's been a rough few days to say the least", she added.

The specific reason that Bredow was in contempt of court is that she had consented to have her son vaccinated in court pleadings late a year ago, although Vitale says that those pleadings were filed "in error", according to USA Today.

She was released from jail on Monday, Oct. 9 after serving five of her seven days. Only California, Mississippi and West Virginia do not allow for nonmedical exemptions. Bredow's case is about her refusal to follow court orders she previously agreed to, according to the judge. A statement about Horne's version of their agreement has not been obtained.

When asked if the experience of going to jail was worth it in the end, especially given the outcome, the mother-of-two said she still stands by her anti-vaxx stance.

The recommendation will go into effect starting this weekend, but she has 21 days to appeal the Friend of the Court's decision.

Oakland County Judge Karen McDonald ruled Wednesday that Rebecca Bredow, 40, of Ferndale would no longer have primary custody of the boy, but would share joint custody with her ex-husband, James Horne. She told the Press that being in jail was "horrific" but "I still stand by my choices because I stand up for what I believe in".
