Michael Jordan: Other 28 teams 'going to be garbage'

Jordan's spokesperson Estee Portnoy told The Associated Press on Monday (Oct 9) that the Hornets owner "feels so great about being able to impact the Charlotte community and help people who really deserve it. Michael and Novant are really excited about this project".

Some feel his comments were in reference to the competitive balance in the National Basketball Association, which has seen the Golden State Warriors win two of the last three National Basketball Association titles, and faced the Cleveland Cavaliers in three straight finals. In an interview with Cigar Aficionado, Jordan said the superteam era will leave the league with one or two great teams while the 28 other teams "are going to be garbage".

"You're going to have one or two teams that are going to be great and another 28 teams that are going to be garbage, or they are going to have a tough time surviving in the business environment". "My biggest problem from a competitive standpoint is the focus of today's athlete".

Portnoy said Jordan, 54, was motivated by a study that found poor children in Charlotte have the worst odds of those of any of the top 50 cities in the United States to lift themselves out of poverty.

On Tiger Woods, and the advent of social media: "Tiger played at his peak somewhere towards the end of my career".

"I never played against Wilt Chamberlain", he noted. To now say that one's greater than the other is being a little bit unfair.I won six championships.

"I can't play for every team, so the truth of the matter is I left one team". Bill Russell won 11. He indirectly compared Woods' relationship with Jack Nicklaus to his with Bill Russell. "No, because we played in different eras".

In those championship seasons from 1991-93 and 1996-98, Jordan's teams won 61, 67, 57, 72, 69 and 62 games, dominating the league. Like, am I the reason that they're not that good (laughs)? "To say he's any less than Jack, I think, is unfair". "And if he didn't do it, there's no telling where my emotions would be".
