MGM Faces Questions Over Speed of Response in Las Vegas Shooting

Authorities had previously said the guard, Jesus Campos, was wounded after Paddock began firing at concertgoers. "Something hit me in the back and I took cover". "I am incredibly blessed that somehow I came out of there alive", Schuck added. "Take cover!' If he yelled a second too late, I would have been shot".

Stephen Schuck was one of the first people to encounter Paddock when he went to check out a faulty fire exit door on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay and Casino on October 1, according to a new timeline of events.

Tuesday on Nevada public radio, Undersheriff Kevin McMahill tried to clarify the shift in timeline provided by police, but only raised more questions when he said that a maintenance worker was also on the 32nd floor when Stephen Paddock fired the first shots.

"We believe that he [Paddock] was shooting into the crowd and then the security officer was shot during that event", McMahill said Friday.

Paddock shot the guard at 9.59pm local time, Lombardo said, shortly before raining down bullets on the Route 91 Harvest festival in an attack that began at 10.05pm and lasted 10 minutes. Paddock apparently detected Campos via surveillance cameras he set up outside his hotel suite, police have said.

As previously reported, the hotel sent its own armed security team to the 32nd floor after the shooting rampage had ended, with that contingent arriving around the same time as the Las Vegas Police, who were on the floor around 10:17 p.m., two minutes after Paddock had stopped shooting; Paddock was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound when a SWAT team breached the door of his hotel room almost an hour later.

In that time, Paddock was able to kill 58 people and wound almost 500 others in the worst mass shooting in modern US history.

"We can not be certain about the most recent timeline that has been communicated publically (sic), and we believe what is now being expressed may not be accurate", said MGM Resorts spokesperson Debra DeShong. "As evidenced by law enforcement briefings over the past week, many facts are still unverified and continue to change as events are under review", MGM Resorts International spokeswoman Debra DeShong said in a statement.

A motive for the carnage remains unclear and while police said they recovered a document with numbers on it in Paddock's hotel room, Lombardo on Monday declined to say what it meant. The stock has dropped 5.6 percent since the shooting.

Lombardo added that the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit was compiling a comprehensive picture of Paddock, a known high-stakes gambler who was once prescribed Valium "for anxiousness".

"We can not be certain about the most recent timeline that has been communicated publicly, and we believe what is now being expressed may not be accurate", Debra DeShong, a spokeswoman for the casino operator, said in the statement.
