The Pole had made it to the second round of the Tianjin Open following a victory over Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko. The 30-year-old Sharapova, who returned to tennis in April after serving a suspension for taking the banned substance meldonium, has yet to win a tournament since then.

Sharapova was broken in the first game of the match but hit back straight away, using her forehand to break down her opponent.

The former No.1 dictated the pace of the rallies from the centre and offered Voegele flat and deep returns that the Swiss struggled to counter.

A couple of out-wide aces and a massive backhand victor, Sharapova sealed the first set 6-3. Sharapova credited the victory to her aggressive game in the opening set, the momentum of which carried her all the way to the second set and the victory.

The Swiss won a final game - her fourth - before falling in 64 minutes with eight double-faults.

"We did a really good job of holding serve in the first set", Sharapova said after the match.

Sixth seed Maria Sakkari crashed out, losing 6-0 6-4 to Christina Mchale, while Sara Errani, Aryna Sabalenka and Zhu Lin all advanced.

Sharapova converted all four of her break points to set up a meeting with Poland's Magda Linette.
