Cryptic words from the US president on Saturday (October 7) when asked to clarify a pair of tweets about North Korea.

"Only one thing will work" in dealing with North Korea after years of talks with Pyongyang brought no results, US President Donald Trump has warned. Trump added that North Korea has always fooled the United States negotiators, which is something unacceptable. Asked what the "one thing" he tweeted about was, Trump just replied, "well you'll figure that out pretty soon", and smiled. When asked, he simply said: "You will find out".

Trump did not explain what that "one thing" might be or what he meant with that posting - and White House press aides did not respond to requests for clarification. Tensions have been escalating between Washington and Pyongyang in recent weeks, after an exchange of heated rhetoric, and growing provocations from the rogue regime.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday ahead of a trip to North Carolina, Trump said he had nothing more to clarify.

While he did not explain his comments further, a White House spokeswoman said they likely referred to Iran and North Korea.

"We've made it clear that we hope to resolve this through talks", Tillerson said.

A Russian lawmaker has said that North Korea is ready to launch another missile which is capable of hitting the USA west coast.

"We will do what we must do to prevent that from happening, and it will be done if necessary, believe me".

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has promoted his sister, Kim Yo Jong to the country's top decision-making body, the Central Committee, in a major reshuffle in his government.

Trump's repeated threat of action and choice of words suggesting destruction put him at odds with his secretary of state Rex Tillerson and defence secretary James Mattis, who have both publically pressed for a diplomatic solution.

Trump wrote his latest ominous-sounding tweet shortly after two Russian lawmakers said North Korea is planning to test a missile that could be capable of reaching the West Coast of the United States.
