"We have received several reports of a shooting in Trelleborg", the police spokesman had explained earlier, according to British daily the Express.

According to initial reports people were shot at multiple locations.

Trelleborg is the southernmost town in Sweden, about 33km from Malmo, and has a history of gang violence.

Police say the violence is not being treated as a terrorist attack and officers are continuing to hunt for the gunman.

It is not yet known if there have been any fatalities in the incident. It's packed with police cars in the street'. "There are several people who have experienced confirmed gunshot wounds", a statement issued by Police Skåne read.

The victims were reportedly rushed to hospitals in Malmö and Lund.

Another resident Aron Tyden, who was at home working on his computer when he heard the shooting, said he "thought it was fiercer" as many shots were fired.

Bratt said: "We are blocking certain areas and will conduct a technical survey".

"Right now, it's locked off", he tells local media.
