The new lightweight headset is called Oculus Go and is created to be more effective than the rival Samsung Gear VR, but not as expensive as Oculus Rift itself.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) this week unveiled a new lower-priced virtual reality (VR) headset that's wireless and doesn't need tethering to a computer, unlike most competing products.

In addition to announcing a brand-new standalone VR headset in the form of the Oculus Go, Oculus also announced yet another permanent price cut for its regular Rift headset.

Oculus Go doesn't use a PC, nor does it require the use of a smartphone.

As for hardware specs, the details are now a little sparse, but it uses improved lenses. With a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, the display is a fast-switch LCD screen. It also includes built-in speakers that provide spatial audio, along with a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

At its fourth annual Oculus Connect conference, the Facebook-owned Oculus announced a series of products to push Facebook's VR-focused strategy.

On the one hand, there's new and more affordable virtual reality hardware.

It's not out until 2019, so it's obviously a big deal, but the only thing we know is that it doesn't involve Titanfall or Star Wars (Respawn are also working on a secret Star Wars game for EA).

Facebook has announced a new member of its Oculus VR headset family and an update to the Santa Cruz prototype. Oculus was acquired by Facebook in early 2014.With an aim to control your VR with your looks Oculus invested in The Eye Tribe.

Meant to appeal to the likes of Walmart and Deloitte, Oculus For Business is a bundle not too dissimilar from the Business Edition of the HTC Vive.

Facebook hasn't revealed much in the way of specs or battery life yet, but it did say that development kits would start shipping out in November. You can already buy the Gear VR which is a similar, portable device, but you need a high-end Samsung device to operate the headset. Oculus Dash is Rift's new interface that has been built from the ground up for Touch.

The Rift bundle includes two Touch controllers, two sensors, and six free apps - including Robo Recall, and the Medium and Quill creative tools. But the straight divide between reality and VR may trample the burning need for consumers at large to adopt such headsets.

Rift is unlike anything you've ever experienced.

The company is also promising to make improvements to avatars themselves. The upcoming app called Venues will allow people to "watch live concerts, live sports, and premieres of movies and TV shows, all around the world with friends", Zuckerberg said.
