Cleveland Browns Name Kevin Hogan Starting QB

"I've made the decision to start Kevin this week".

Kizer has regressed in recent weeks, throwing interceptions and prompting Jackson to make the swap. With Kizer at quarterback in the game, Cleveland had 175 total yards and two red-zone turnovers as he completed 8 of 17 for 87 yards with an interception. The second-round pick from Notre Dame has showed promise, but he's been indecisive and inaccurate, and Jackson thinks the next step is for him to watch from the sideline and learn. The third-string quarterback is Cody Kessler, who already has started (not well) for Cleveland.

"Kevin has always been right there in my opinion", Jackson said.

Although Hogan wasn't viewed as a legitimate threat to start, Jackson maintains the former fifth-round pick from Stanford was always in the mix.

Only such distractions shouldn't be a problem in the Browns' locker room, where several players similarly knelt prior to a preseason game against the New York Giants and a Week 3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, where 21 players silently protested during the anthem.

Hogan's first start of the season will come on Sunday, Oct. 15 on the road against the Houston Texans.

A sixth-round pick of the Chiefs past year, Hogan was poached off Kansas City's practice squad at the start of the 2016 regular season. He looked pretty good last week, though, completing 16 of 19 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns along with 30 rushing yards.

Kizer, the 52nd pick of the 2017 draft, can still be a franchise quarterback, Jackson said on October 9. "Offensively, the fewer changes the better so whoever they decide to go with it's probably best for the offense to stick with them as long as you can, just because there's a lot of coordination that needs to happen between the different facets of the offense".
