The Boy Scouts of America says its historic decision, to let girls walk the same path from Cub Scout to Eagle Scout, was made to help busy families find programs for multiple children, both boys and girls. However, starting in 2019, girls will also be able to achieve the top rank of Eagle Scout. The rank is now only available through the boy's only organization.

"I want to be a Boy Scout because they do more active things than Girl Scouts because we don't really do much to get patches", said Bernadette Flicker.

"Not to mention the fact that adding females to the Boy Scouts would create a fundamental conflict with the name of our organization", said Evan Miller, Cub Scout parent.

"You could see it coming in the long run", said Scott.

"She comes to a lot of our events and does the same stuff as the boys", Simora said.

That's because her daughter was one of those little girls who watched her brother during his Cub Scout meetings.

"We serve 1.8 million girls and we know there are millions of girls out there who could benefit from being Girl Scouts", Duquette said.

Anderson says that the BOA has had other co-ed programs since 1971.

"It shouldn't just be so stereotypical that boys are rugged and girls are not, girls are in the kitchen and boys aren't".

Girl Scouts is, and will remain, the scouting program that truly benefits USA girls by providing a safe space for them to learn and lead.

"I know that the Boy Scouts have been experiencing a decline as a segment of their membership base has shifted away", she said.

"Girls would be able to join as cub scouts, in cub scout packs that would be single gender cub scout dens, but would be able to be a Cub scout as a girl", Mike Butler, scout executive explained. "The things this program embodies are just as important to girls as they are to boys".

Former Girl Scout Stacy Rains disagrees, saying the change is an attempt to increase revenue.

Boy Scouts of America already did offer some programs that girls could join.

Republican National Committeewoman Juliana Bergeron of Keene was a Girl Scout and said she wonders about that organization's future. We think that's the most critical point for both a girl and boy, to be in an all-girl or all-boy environment. Girl Scouts is the best leadership experience for girls in the world. But this is the first time the organization has opened up its traditional programs to girls, including the option to reach Eagle Scout, a distinction only about 2 percent of scouts have ever achieved, according to the BSA.
