Apple's stock accounts for over half of the Dow's gain

Winners and Losers: Freeport-McMoRan sunk 2.23 percent after Deutsche Bank downgraded the mining company's stock to "Sell".

Health care companies rose.

Shares of the largest USA health insurer UnitedHealth touched a life high and was last up 6.3 percent, after the company reported a stronger-than-expected profit and raised its full-year earnings forecast.

"My view is it may take several days or a couple of weeks before it can sustain a level above 23,000", said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Boston Private Wealth in NY.

Stocks are drifting mostly lower in midday trading, a day after major indexes closed at their latest record highs. The nation's largest health insurance company has exited most of the ObamaCare markets.

Netflix sank 1.7 percent as investors anxious about its mounting spending on programming.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped less than 1 point to 2,556.

The Dow Jones increased 11 points to begin trading at 22,968 points - a new record high level. The Nasdaq composite was little changed at 6,623.

The U.S. stock market opened mixed Tuesday after the release of macroeconomic data.

That, along with a 3.6 percent rise in Johnson & Johnson, led a 1.5 percent gain in the S&P healthcare sector .SPXHC .

Boeing fell 1 percent after rival aircraft maker Airbus took a majority stake on Bombardier's C-series passenger jets.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 19 points, or 0.1 percent, to 22,976.

The Shanghai Composite Index was down 6.43 points at 3,372.04 and Tokyo's Nikkei 225 gained 0.38 per cent to 21,336.12.
