The Battle of Sexes movie took sexuality to the court.

GREENE: This was the 1973 tennis match in which Billie Jean King triumphed over her male opponent, Bobby Riggs.

"We got that smug smile wiped right off our faces", Silverman tells CNN. Their new movie is nonfiction, and imagine the position they were in.

Even if you've Googled the outcome, or are old enough to remember watching it on television, the film's reenactment of the battle and the bluster makes for entertaining and at times riveting viewing.

In addition to telling the story of Billie Jean's fight for gender equality in tennis, it also tells the story of how she began discovering the fact that she was a lesbian, which was complicated by the fact that she had a loving husband in Larry King (Austin Stowell), a fellow tennis player and staunch supporter of her efforts to improve gender equality in the game. Guthrie was the first woman to compete in the Daytona 500 in 1977 and she raced in 33 NASCAR races over four seasons.

"We really brought the entertainment factor to the match and made it exciting to people", says King.

"It's sad that it's still relevant", Carell tells CNN.

Shaw's story - which he told Van Natta he kept secret for four decades out of fear of reprisals from the mob but has now chose to reveal to "set the record straight" - is titillating, implying that King's vaunted victory in 1973 wasn't on the level.

"Your dreams sort of rise with you". Good thing that that doesn't exist today.' But it does.

EMMA STONE: (As Billie Jean King) Yeah, I'm done talking. And now, after meeting her, she reminds me so much of her. When they suck there's blame to go around and a million causes - the unearned creative liberties, the important points unfairly omitted, the obvious elements unnecessarily fussed over. Kramer is a dinosaur, but even at his most offensive, Pullman brings a risky charm and wit to the tradition-bound character.

The company said it will donate 79 cents from every ticket sold to WSF, a figure that represents the amount of money American women on average earn for every dollar paid to men, according to a release. In this movie, Steve Carell portrays the role of world champion Bobby Riggs. The actual event was about much more than tennis, of course. She was first seen on the big screen in the 2007 high school comedy "Superbad", which also starred Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, and Christopher Mitz-Plasse. I kept waiting for the scene where he was going to do and say awful things, and he never does. "It was a big joke".

Riggs claimed the match with King was a lark ("I do it for fun", the real Riggs told 60 Minutes at the time) but heavy gambling debts and a collapsing marriage (Elisabeth Shue plays his long-suffering wife) had him in dire need of a major score that might double as personal redemption.

"I think what was interesting to us was really what was going on in her social life".

Examining the drawing, she added, "This is me, I guess".

"If you read his obituary, no one said that he was a mean chauvinist". But if you showed me a picture of Billie Jean King I would have said, yeah, that's Billie Jean.

DAYTON: And our kids would say, you know, stop fighting. And freedom and things go forward and then they go backward, they go forwards and they go backwards.

Riggs lost to King, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 and King said after the victory, "I thought it would set us back 50 years if I didn't win that match". "It's really refreshing to spend time with somebody who is so easy to talk to".
