The statement said: "The meeting witnessed the discussion of ways to revive the peace process and the establishment of a Palestinian state, with the necessary guarantees to contribute to the success of the process of settlement between the two sides".

The calls between Egypt and Hamas angered Israel.

Trump too met Netanyahu in NY on Monday ahead of the UN General Assembly and again expressed his hopes for a peaceful settlement. At the previous meeting, which was held in Washington in May, the Egyptian President said he supports a regional peace conference under the auspices of President Donald Trump.

Several months after Sisi met at his palace in Cairo with Netanyahu and with the leader of the opposition Isaac Herzog in another secret meeting in order to examine the possibility of changes in Israel to help speed up the "peace process".

The Egyptian president joined Netanyahu for talks with then U.S. secretary of state John Kerry hosted by King Abdullah II in the Jordanian city of Aqaba in February 2016, a former USA official confirmed to AFP earlier this year. According to sources in the meeting who spoke to Ha'arez, the Egyptian president expressed optimism about the Trump administration's efforts to renew the "peace process", and reassured US Jews that Egypt was interested in helping.

Abbas's internationally recognised Palestinian Authority is located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, but it has had no control in Gaza for a decade - after the Islamist movement Hamas seized the territory in a near civil war in 2007.
