The U.S. announced its latest round of harsh sanctions on the isolated nation this week, affecting oil, gas, and other exports to North Korea.

"Now is the time when the global community is required to unite against North Korea's provocative acts, which threaten world peace", the Japanese leader told a press briefing at his office. Sources have said Chinese companies shipping oil to the North will also probably be targeted by future USA sanctions.

The emergency Security Council consultations were requested by the United States and Japan following North Korea's launch of a ballistic missile on Friday local time, which flew over Japan's Hokkaido.

The government said the missile landed around 2,260 km east off the cape of Erimo in Hokkaido Prefecture in Japan's north, at around 7.16 am local time (2216 GMT Thursday).

"In the context of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the heads of state strongly condemned the provocative actions of the DPRK, which grossly violated the requirements of the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council", the Kremlin said in a statement.

"We strongly urge the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) to cease all provocations immediately, and reiterate our long-standing call for the DPRK to abide by its worldwide obligations and commitments", the Ministry said, referring to North Korea by its official name.

Kim will accompany President Moon Jae-in for a visit to NY for the annual U.N. General Assembly meeting next week. The missile flew about 3,700 kilometers reaching an altitude of 770 kilometers.

Guterres will be discussing the situation on the Korean Peninsula, with all concerned parties in the margins of the upcoming high level week of the UN General Assembly.

Cui Tiankai, Chinese ambassador to the USA, said Friday that the Trump administration should do more to peacefully de-escalate tensions with North Korea.

North Korea confirmed on Saturday that it conducted another medium-range ballistic missile drill Friday under the personal guidance of its top leader Kim Jong Un.
