Murray announced his decision to resign on Tuesday, after the Seattle Times reported that his younger cousin told the newspaper that the mayor repeatedly molested him as a teenager in the 1970s.

Dyer accuses the Murray of using his "position of power" to attack the men accusing him of abuse.

In a statement released Tuesday - just hours after an article in the Seattle Times included a new claim of molestation levied against the mayor - Murray again asserted his innocence, but said, "it is important that my personal issues do not affect the ability of our City government to conduct the public's business". During Murray's tenure as mayor, Seattle sued Trump over his executive order cracking down on sanctuary cities that limit their cooperation with federal immigration agents.

He said he was resigning effective 5 p.m. Wednesday so the scandal would no longer overshadow his office. He said Murray lived with them in Medford, NY, for about a year in the mid-1970s. "To the people of this special city and to my dedicated staff, I am sorry for this painful situation". "I look forward to engaging in meaningful discussions with voters and my fellow candidates about the best ways to solve Seattle's crises so that we do not become a city of haves and have nots".

This time, it was a cousin that accused him of abuse, telling the Times that when the two shared a bedroom at a home in NY in the mid-1970s, Murray forced the then-13-year-old into sex.

Murray denied the allegations, as he has in the past.

Mr Murray, 62, said that he was "proud of all that I have accomplished" but added that due to the reported accusations "it is best for the city if I step aside". As a parent, former public official and openly gay woman these allegations are beyond sad and tragic; no official is above the law. "During this time Director of Operations Fred Podesta has been tasked with leading the transition".
