Everton, in stark contrast, find themselves in the bottom three and Rooney, chin in hands, watched forlornly from the dugout after being substituted.

Wayne Rooney's first time back at Old Trafford since his summer move to Everton ended in a hefty defeat, with United putting four past the struggling Toffees.

At least he received a warm reception, perhaps out of sympathy for the predicament he's facing at his new team.

It was the most explosive moment of a largely sedate lunchtime fixture with Arsenal transformed from the side that collapsed so meekly to lose 4-0 at Liverpool on top of a defeat to Stoke.

Jose Mourinho handed the French midfielder the captain's armband for Manchester United's home clash against Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday night. "I would like one of the top five, but all of them, that is not fair for them".

Mkhitaryan slotted home in the dying minutes (83rd) of the game and then Lukaku (89th) fired home against his former club before Martial's (90th) stoppage-time penalty wrapped up a comprehensive victory.

Mourinho, whose side drew 15 games last season as it finished sixth, was pleased with the "clear difference" in its style of play and the ability to push on for wins this season.

"I believe we were focused, determined and showed character".

"Every manager in life has doubts", under-pressure Koeman said. There is nobody who doesn't have doubts as a manager. If you don't win and you have a big number of players in your squad you have doubts about how you need to start, the system to play. Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service. "Be realistic and let's talk at the end of the season".

"We need time, but it's hard in football".

With goal-shy Southampton and Crystal Palace next on United's PL fixture list, there's no reason to believe their dominance won't continue throughout September, but how will their electric start be represented in Federation Internationale de Football Association 18? Chelsea defender David Luiz was sent off in the 87th minute for a high, sliding challenge on Sead Kolasinac.
