Redskins look to emulate Raiders' offense in prime time

Washington's offensive line will have to contain Oakland OLB Khalil Mack, one of the game's best pass rushers. The Jets, of course, are frightful. They will travel back home to host the Raiders on Sunday night. After being inactive against Tennessee in Week 1, Conley made his debut against the Jets and gave the Raiders secondary a spark while logging more than 80 percent of the defensive plays. It has had its moments. Washington's quarterback Kirk Cousins is a free agent following this season, and the signal caller has completed 41 out of 67 passes for 419 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Assuming Washington shutdown CB Josh Norman (shoulder) plays, it should be a great matchup in the passing phase with the Raiders' Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree going against Norman and CB Bashuad Breeland. Raiders' cornerback David Amerson noted the defense needs to make Cousins uncomfortable and back up that pressure with sticky coverage on the outside.

The Redskins signed Thompson to a two-year contract extension on September 5 with $4.5 million guaranteed.

The Redskins offense hasn't been doing well in the passing department, and their offense was carried by the run game in Week 2. They will likely go after him.

BLITZING SAFETY: Joseph spent plenty of time in the offensive backfield last week. The Redskins placed their 2016 second-round pick on the reserve/left squad list on Monday and ended his season.

Find a ground game: The Redskins also need to be willing to run the ball. It was an important win for a Washington team that has been plagued by slow starts in recent years, owning a 6-13 SU and 7-12 ATS record over its last 19 games played in September according to the OddsShark NFL Database. Surprisingly, the Redskins are third in the National Football League in rushing yards with 146.5 yards per game. Some big plays have been surrendered, although the middle of the Raiders' defense does seem to be tighter this year.

After going 0-4 SU and ATS during the preseason, the Raiders got right back down to business when the regular season began with back-to-back double-digit wins.

SWISS ARMY KNIVES: This should be a showdown of multidimensional threats: Oakland's Cordarrelle Patterson, who's proving he can be more than an elite kick returner, and Washington's Chris Thompson, who's far more than a third-down back. In last game at FedEx Field, the Raiders won 16-13 on November 20, 2005, giving the game ball to coach and former Washington coach Norv Turner. That is a winning combination.

This is a key to a lot of Raiders' games. The more the Raiders don't have to rely on Carr's ability to deliver in the fourth quarter, the better they'll be.

Besides the five players Gruden spoke on, the Redskins also have six other players that were also listed on the injury report this week. Washington got back on track last week and the Raiders have defensive issues. But Oakland's offensive line is stellar and will provide a tough test for the revamped Redskins defense. They must help Marshawn Lynch set the tone for the offense and make the home team want to leave the field.
