The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, honouring the best of USA television, takes place this weekend at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with Stephen Colbert hosting.

Stephen Colbert will be hosting, and if his anticipatory tweets earlier this week are any indication, The Late Show host is ramping up for a fun one. This is the same reason why the seventh season had such a late premiere date this year.

Raleigh native Evan Rachel Wood is nominated for Best Actress in a drama for her role in HBO's "Westworld". She's appeared and won at this year's People's Choice Awards and also made headlines for her trench-coat-style gown with a never-ending trail at the MET Gala.

Luckily, you don't have to be a cable subscriber, or even have a TV, to be able to watch TV's biggest night. But streaming rivals Amazon and Hulu are also strong competitors in some important Emmy categories.

And there's no short of hot contenders to take its place. But something else they have in common is that come Sunday, both of them will officially be in the history books as hosts of the Primetime Emmy Awards.

This year the freshman HBO science fiction western drama Westworld and NBC sketch comedy Saturday Night Live are the most nominated programs, with 22 nominations each. However, there will still be fierce competition between "Stranger Things", "The Handmaid's Tale", "This Is Us", "Westworld", "House of Cards", "Better Call Saul" and "The Crown".

The Emmys will be broadcast live Sunday from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and host Stephen Colbert promises Trump will get plenty of attention - see "attacks".

"He might care about who wins the reality- show category", Colbert said.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jeffrey Tambor unstoppable?

The White House hijinks of "Veep" laughed up 17 nominations, including Best Comedy series. Alexis Bledel already snagged the win for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her appearance on the show.
